Newey rules out move to Ferrari: "Maybe if I were twenty years younger"

| by Jozef Baartman

Adrian Newey was approached several times by Ferrari, as the Italian team tried to tempt the top designer of Red Bull Racing to switch to Maranello. However, it never came to fruition because the Englishman simply didn't want to move to Italy. Newey revealed this in an interview with Sky Sport Italia.

Over the years, the 64-year-old has turned down multiple offers from Ferrari, even though the illustrious team was appealing. "I was in contact with Ferrari in the past, and I was very tempted to go. After all, it is clearly a legendary brand," the designer is quoted by Formulapassion.it. The first contact was in 1993. "And then in 1997, when I moved from Williams to McLaren."

At the time, rejecting Ferrari was very difficult for Newey. "My children were very young then, and I didn't want them to change schools. If I had gone to Ferrari, I would have had to move to Italy, and that would have been complicated." That influenced his decision not to accept Ferrari's offer, although the team continued to express interest in the British designer's services.

Future at Ferrari ruled out

However, Newey chose an adventure at Red Bull after his time at McLaren. Recently, he extended his contract in Milton Keynes, once again ruling out a future in Italy. "I am now 64 years old, and the transition from one team to another is always a big change. It requires some adjustment, and there are new ways of working. If I were twenty years younger, maybe I would have considered it."
